The Distrito Federal holds Brasília, Brazil's bold modernist capital inaugurated in 1960 and designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer and urban planner Lúcio Costa. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city's futuristic civic buildings — the National Congress, the Palácio do Planalto, the Itamaraty Palace — remain one of the 20th century's greatest architectural achievements.
