Festival de Parintins (Boi Bumbá)

The Parintins Festival is Brazil's second-largest folklore event, a three-night battle between two rival Boi Bumbá oxen — Garantido (red) and Caprichoso (blue) — staged in the 35,000-seat Bumbódromo on a remote Amazon river island. The spectacle fuses indigenous mythology, Amazon imagery and samba-like choreography into one of the most unique festivals in the world.

Bumba Meu Boi de São Luís

São Luís hosts the Maranhão version of the Bumba Meu Boi folklore festival — a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Different from Parintins, this tradition features multiple groups (bumba) of different styles (sotaques), parading through neighborhoods with elaborate costumes, hand drums and hypnotic call-and-response chants that trace back to African and indigenous roots.

The Círio de Nazaré is the largest Catholic procession in the world, drawing over two million people to Belém to escort the image of Our Lady of Nazareth through the city's streets. The procession travels 3.6 km with worshippers pulling a thick rope attached to the carriage, and the festival extends for two weeks of celebrations throughout the city.

Oktoberfest de Blumenau

Blumenau's Oktoberfest is the world's second-largest beer festival after Munich's original, drawing over 700,000 visitors to the city's Vila Germânica park. Founded by German immigrants in 1984 to lift spirits after a catastrophic flood, the festival preserves authentic folk dances (schuhplattler), costumes, music and beer culture of the Blumenau's Pomeranian and Bavarian ancestors.

Brazil's Black Consciousness Day on November 20 — the anniversary of the death of Quilombo dos Palmares leader Zumbi — is celebrated most intensely in Salvador, where over 80% of the population has African heritage. The day features candomblé ceremonies, capoeira presentations, Afro-bloc performances and cultural events at the Pelourinho.
