Maranhão is a state of extraordinary contrasts — from the surreal white-sand dunes and seasonal lagoons of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park to the colonial grandeur of São Luís, a UNESCO-listed city with the largest collection of Portuguese azulejo tiles outside of Europe. The state is the heartland of Bumba Meu Boi, one of Brazil's most theatrical and colorful folk festivals.
